Planetary Returns

On this page

A planetary return is the simplest transit there is: a planet travels all the way round and arrives back at the exact degree where it was when you were born — the same gate and line on the Rave Mandala.

Fast bodies do this constantly. Slow ones take decades, which is why only the slow ones mark anything. Human Design looks at those slow markers through Cycle Analysis, which describes life stages rather than predicting events.

What a return is#

Every planet sat in a particular gate and line at your birth, which is how a bodygraph is calculated in the first place. A return is that planet crossing all 64 gates and reaching the same place again.

Orbital speed is what decides whether a return is routine weather or a life stage:

  • Fast bodies return constantly. The Moon crosses the whole wheel every 27.3 days; Mercury, Venus and Mars come back round in months to a couple of years.
  • Slow bodies take decades. Saturn needs about 29.5 years; Uranus about 84.
  • Only the slow ones mark anything. A stage you meet once or twice in a life is the only kind you can notice as one.

The Solar return#

The Solar return happens once a year, when the transiting Sun comes back to the gate and line of your birth Sun. It lands near your birthday, though rarely on the exact hour of it.

The Sun and Earth carry roughly 70% of the neutrino influence in the teaching, which makes the Sun the loudest body in the field — and a Solar return is that body back on its own starting point, after about 5.71 days in each of 64 gates (the theme of the week follows the journey). It is the only return most people notice more than twice.

A Solar return chart always keeps your natal Incarnation Cross. The Cross is drawn from the Sun and Earth on both sides of the chart, and at a Solar return both Suns are back: the Personality Sun by definition, and the Design Sun because it is taken 88° of solar arc earlier, which lands on your natal Design Sun too. Your Profile comes from the same two Suns, so it stays as well. Everything else — the Moon, the Nodes, the planets — sits somewhere new each year.

Ra Uru Hu pointed out one consequence of that 88° arc. The Design side of the year's chart is calculated for a moment about three months before your birthday, so in his reading the new year starts to work on the body roughly a quarter of a year before it reaches the personality.

Marker Age Orbit What the teaching says it is about
Solar return Every year ~1 year Back to your own birth Sun gate and line
Saturn return 28 to 30 ~29.5 years The discipline of form: what holds and what goes
Uranus opposition 38 to 44 ~84 years The emphasis moves from the South Node to the North Node
Kiron (Chiron) return 50 to 51 ~50 years "Coming off the roof"
Second Saturn return 58 to 59 ~29.5 years The harvest: handing responsibility on
Nodal return ~18–19, ~37, ~56 ~18.6 years The Nodes back where they started; a smaller cycle, not a Cycle Analysis stage

How a cycle chart is read#

Cycle Analysis does not stop at the date. For each return it casts a cycle chart: a full, two-sided bodygraph for the exact moment of the return, with the Personality side at that moment and the Design side 88° of solar arc earlier — the same calculation as a birth chart, run for a different instant. That chart is then read against your natal chart, the way two people's charts are read against each other.

The order matters. Start with the three things that set the theme of the stage:

  1. The Incarnation Cross of the cycle chart, the theme of the years it opens.
  2. The Profile, the role that theme is lived through.
  3. The Nodes, the environment and the direction of the stage.

Only then look at the channels: the ones the cycle chart defines on its own, and the ones it completes together with your natal gates. Those are the parts of the stage that meet what you already carry.

Saturn, Uranus and Kiron move slowly enough that retrograde motion can carry them across the exact point one, two or three times over several months. Each crossing is a real return moment and gives a slightly different chart. gethumandesign casts the chart for the first pass by default and lets you open the others.

The Cycle Analysis returns#

Jovian Archive's Cycle Analysis works with three slow stages.

The Saturn return, ages 28 to 30#

Saturn's orbit is about 29.5 years, so it arrives back between 28 and 30 — and again, for those who get there, around 58 to 59.

In the teaching, Saturn carries the discipline of form: what has been built, what holds, and what has to be let go. It meets the structures put up during your twenties — the career, the commitments, the relationships — and the ones that were built to somebody else's specification tend not to survive the encounter.

The Uranus opposition, ages 38 to 44#

Uranus takes about 84 years to go all the way round the wheel. At roughly half of that, between 38 and 44, it sits exactly opposite where it started.

The teaching treats this as the seam between the two halves of a life: the emphasis moves from the South Node to the North Node, with the first half running on one set of themes and the second half on the other. Somewhere in that window the North Node takes over, and the environment and the direction that felt right for twenty years quietly stop fitting.

The Kiron return, around 50 to 51#

Around 50 or 51 comes the Kiron return — Ra Uru Hu's spelling for the body astrology calls Chiron. Ra described it as "coming off the roof": the end of the long stretch of building and obligation, and the start of whatever is actually yours.

The roof is the 6th line's. Anyone with a 6 in their Profile lives three phases, and the Saturn return and the Kiron return are the two turns between them: onto the roof at the first, off it at the second. For them these two returns carry the most weight of all.

One caveat matters here. Chiron activates no gate in Human Design. It defines nothing, completes nothing and changes no center in your bodygraph; it is an astrology point the app carries in a side panel, alongside Lilith. The return still has an exact date — the moment Chiron gets back to its birth position — so it can be dated like any other. The cycle chart cast for that moment is read through the ordinary bodies, because Chiron adds nothing to it.

The nodal return#

The North Node and South Node take about 18.6 years to go round the wheel, backwards. They come back to their birth positions around 18 to 19, again around 37, and around 56 — and around 74 for those who get there.

The Nodes are the environment and the direction of a life, so a nodal return puts you back in the same orientation you were born into, with the years since behind you. It is not one of the three stages Cycle Analysis was built on, but its chart is cast and read the same way.

Later additions#

Two more markers circulate widely:

  • The second Saturn return, around 58 to 59 — the harvest. Where the first asked for discipline, the second asks you to let go: to hand responsibility on, reap what the years have built, and live what has held without anything left to prove.
  • The Uranus return, at 84, for those who reach it — one complete circuit.

Both are extrapolations from the same orbital arithmetic rather than part of the original Cycle Analysis material. They are worth knowing as extensions, not as core teaching.

Where you see it on gethumandesign.com#

The Cycles page, part of Pro, lists your returns in order: each Saturn return, the Uranus opposition and the Kiron return on the timeline, the nodal returns set apart below them, and your Solar return for any year, with the date of every exact pass and the age you are at it. Open one and it shows the cycle chart against your natal bodygraph, Cross, Profile and Nodes first.

The list only needs your birth date; a slow planet moves too little in a day for the hour to matter. The cycle chart needs an exact birth time, because it is read against your natal chart, and the natal Moon and several gate lines can change inside an uncertain hour. The dates run to late 2053, where the ephemeris the app uses ends; a return after that is shown with an approximate age and no date.

How to hold them#

A return is a life stage, not a scheduled disaster. It does not do anything to you: it marks how far round a very slow planet has got since you were born. The themes people report at those ages are the themes of that planet's gate, not a verdict on how you have lived.

The ages are windows, not verdicts. The moment of a return is exact to the minute, but what it marks unfolds over months or years around it, and the age itself shifts from one person to the next with where the planet stood at birth. A Saturn return at 28 and one at 30 are the same stage.

And a return changes nothing about your design. Your type, Strategy and Authority are fixed by your birth moment and do not move, at 29 or at 84. Nothing about a return overrides them, and nothing about it needs preparing for — the same rule as every other transit, set out in full under transits and your authority and lived out over the seven-year experiment.

Where to study it#

The primary material is Ra's own: Life Cycles Analysis, recorded in 2005, sets out the Saturn return, the Uranus opposition and the Kiron return and how their charts are read against the natal one. Jovian Archive's Cycle Analysis in Human Design summarises the same method, and the HD Collective has published shorter articles on the individual returns.
