Human Design Foundations

On this page

Human Design is a system for understanding how your unique energy works. It shows how you're meant to make decisions, where your natural strengths lie, and how you interact with the people around you. It combines ancient wisdom traditions with modern astronomy and physics into a single map of you: the bodygraph.

This is the right place to begin. The pages below build on each other, so if Human Design is new to you, read them in order. By the end you'll understand what the system claims, where it comes from, and exactly how the chart on your screen was produced from your birth details.

A suggested reading order#

Human Design can look intimidating at first: nine centers, dozens of gates, channels, profiles, types, authorities. The foundations are simpler than they appear, and they unlock everything else. These six pages follow each other; the Next link at the bottom of each one takes you through them in this order, and on to your type.

  1. What Human Design is: the big picture. What the system is, the story of how it came about, and why people find it useful for decisions, work, and relationships.
  2. What it's for: what you actually do with it: make aligned decisions, understand your relationships, and work in a way that fits you.
  3. History and origins: Ra Uru Hu, the 1987 encounter on Ibiza, and how the system was founded.
  4. The four systems behind it: the older traditions Human Design weaves into one chart.
  5. How a chart is calculated: the mechanics. Your chart is built from two snapshots in time: the moment of your birth (your conscious Personality) and a point about three months earlier (your unconscious Design). This page shows how astronomy turns into the colored-in bodygraph.
  6. How to read your bodygraph: a guided tour of the finished chart, and the order to read it in.
  7. Your type: the payoff. Once you know how the chart is made, your type tells you the practical heart of it: how your energy is meant to move and the simplest rule for making aligned decisions.

From there, you can go as deep as you like, into strategy and authority, definition, planets, lines, and the circuitry that links the channels.

The four systems it synthesises#

Part of what makes Human Design distinctive is that it weaves together four older systems into one chart. You don't need to study any of them separately, but knowing the ingredients helps the bodygraph make sense. The four systems behind Human Design covers them in full; in short:

  • The I Ching: the ancient Chinese Book of Changes and its 64 hexagrams. These become the 64 gates arranged around the edge of the bodygraph.
  • Astrology: the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets at your two birth moments determine which gates and lines are activated.
  • The Hindu-Brahmin chakra system: reimagined and expanded from seven chakras into the nine centers of the bodygraph.
  • The Kabbalist Tree of Life: its pathways inform the channels that connect the centers.

To these, Human Design adds a fifth, modern thread: a quantum-physics-inspired view of the neutrino and how energy passes between people. The result is a single, mechanical map you can actually use.

How to use these pages#

You don't have to memorise anything. Read for orientation, then come back to specific pages as questions arise. If you already have your chart, keep it open alongside these explanations. The system clicks fastest when you can see your own type, centers, and profile while you read.
