Retrograde Planets
Updated
On this page
A small red R beside a gate on the Transits page means that planet is retrograde. The planet has not turned around. Seen from a moving Earth it appears to slide backwards along the wheel for a few weeks or months, and then carries on as before.
Human Design records that appearance for one reason, and it is a narrow one: it changes the timing of a transit. A retrograde planet can cross the same gate two or three times instead of once, so a transit you thought had ended comes back. It changes nothing about what the gate means.
Why a planet looks like it goes backwards#
Every planet travels the same way round the Sun and none of them stops. What changes is where you are watching from.
Earth is on an inside track, and an inside track is a faster one. Mars takes nearly two of our years to go round once, Jupiter twelve, Pluto about 248. So Earth catches an outer planet up and passes it, the way a car on a faster lane passes a slower one — and while you are passing, the slower car appears to drift backwards against the hills behind it. Nothing about the slower car has changed. The wheel is those hills.
Mercury and Venus sit inside Earth's orbit rather than outside it, so the pass goes the other way round — they overtake us — but the view from here works the same. Astronomers call the whole effect apparent retrograde motion, and apparent is the load-bearing word. It is a fact about a line of sight between two moving bodies, not a force acting on anything.
Most of the time several planets are in that backwards stretch. These are the ones in it right now:
Retrograde right now
As of5 of the 8 planets are retrograde. The Nodes always move backwards, and the Sun, Earth and Moon never do.
How long a planet stays on that list follows from how slowly it goes round. Mercury's backwards stretch lasts about three weeks; for the planets from Jupiter outwards it lasts four months or more, so each of them is retrograde for a large part of every year. Whatever the list shows today, what it changes is when a transit starts and stops, and nothing else.
What it changes in Human Design#
A transit is a planet's position dropped onto the Rave Mandala and read as a gate and a line — the calculation that built your bodygraph, run for today instead of for the day you were born. The direction of travel comes along with the position, and here is everything it does:
- The gate keeps its meaning. A gate held by a retrograde planet is the same gate held by a direct one. No keynote reverses, nothing is undone, and a channel completed from outside behaves exactly as it would otherwise.
- The stay gets longer, and broken. A planet moving backwards re-crosses gates it has already been through. Mercury does this about three times a year and Venus about once every nineteen months, so a gate that would hold them for a week or two can hold them, off and on, across a couple of months.
- A transit can return. If a gate's edge falls inside the backwards stretch, the planet enters the gate, leaves it and enters it again. Where that planet was completing one of your hanging gates, the center it activated goes quiet in the gap and is activated a second time afterwards. This is the one place the R earns its space: an until Wednesday that is not the end of the story.
The lunar Nodes are the standing exception. They travel backwards through the wheel as a matter of course, roughly 106 days to a gate, so they wear the mark almost permanently and it tells you nothing unusual when they do.
What it does not mean#
Mercury retrograde has a large life outside Human Design. Popular astrology reads it as a warning: messages go astray, technology fails, don't sign the contract, don't book the flight. Three or four times a year the phrase is everywhere, and plenty of people find it a useful way to name a rough few weeks.
Human Design makes no such claim. The system reads a planet by the gate and the line it activates, and the gate is the same gate whichever way the planet is travelling. There is no retrograde keynote, no list of things to avoid, and no advice attached to the mark. It also leaves out the whole apparatus that would carry a meaning like that — signs, houses, aspects — which is set out under astrology in Human Design.
That is a statement about what this system says, not about what is true. If Mercury retrograde is a frame you find useful, nothing here contradicts it; Human Design simply does not use it. What it offers instead is narrower and checkable: which gate, which line, and until when.
Where you see it on gethumandesign.com#
The Transits page in the app shows every body in the sky with the gate and line it is currently in. A body travelling backwards carries a small red R after its gate — the only mark on that tile that is not a position — and a line under the grid says what it means, with a link back to this page.
Your own chart carries the same mark. The Planets tab puts an R after any planet that was retrograde at the moment it was measured: your birth for the Personality column, about 88 days before it for Design. It is there because it is true of the sky that day and experienced readers look for it, not because Human Design reads it. The gate and line mean exactly what they would for a planet going forwards, and the Nodes carry the R in almost every chart.
The assistant will tell you the same thing if you ask it what the R is, and it can say when a retrograde planet is due back in a gate that matters to your chart.
How to hold it#
A transit is weather, and retrograde is a detail of how that weather is moving. It asks nothing of you. Knowing a planet is about to re-enter a gate tells you that a borrowed activation may come back for a second spell — useful for recognising the pattern afterwards, not a reason to plan around it.
What to do about any transit is the answer it always was: nothing, unless your own Strategy and Authority say otherwise. Transits and your authority sets out why, at length, and it holds for a planet going backwards exactly as it holds for one going forwards.
