The Four Types in Human Design (and the Manifesting Generator)

Your type is the first and most important thing to know about your Human Design. It describes the kind of energy you carry, how your aura interacts with the world, and, crucially, your Strategy: the simplest, most reliable way for you to make decisions and move through life with less resistance.

There are four types, and each one is defined by its aura: Manifestor, Generator, Projector and Reflector. The Manifesting Generator has the Generator's open, enveloping aura, so in Ra Uru Hu's original teaching it is a kind of Generator, not a type of its own. Many schools and apps list it as a fifth type, because its Strategy and pace differ enough to need their own description, and this guide gives it its own page for that reason.

Everyone is one of these types, determined entirely by which centers and channels are defined in your chart (not by personality). If you have your chart in front of you but aren't sure where to look, start with how to read your Human Design chart.

The types at a glance#

Energy types vs. non-energy types#

The deepest divide between the types is whether the Sacral center is defined:

• Sacral types (Generators and Manifesting Generators) have a defined Sacral: a reliable, renewable engine of life-force energy. They're built to do work they love and to respond.
• Non-Sacral types (Manifestors, Projectors, Reflectors) do not have this consistent engine. They are not designed to work the same long, sustained hours, and they thrive by managing their energy differently.

Signature and Not-Self theme#

Each type has a signature, the feeling you get when you're living in alignment with your Strategy, and a not-self theme: the emotional signal that you've drifted off course. These are your built-in feedback system.
