Planets & Activations

Every line, gate, channel, and center in your chart comes from one source: the positions of the planets at two moments in time. Human Design takes 13 planetary positions and calculates each one twice. Once at the moment of your birth, and once about three months earlier. Those 26 placements are your activations, and they are what color in the bodygraph.

If your chart is a circuit board, the planets are the switches. Where each planet sits in the zodiac maps to a specific gate and line, and that gate "switches on." Enough of the right gates switch on together to form channels, channels define centers, and the pattern of defined centers determines your type, strategy, and authority. So before any of the famous labels, it all starts here.

The 13 planets used in Human Design#

Human Design borrows the planetary bodies of astrology but uses them mechanically, as precise coordinates rather than personality omens. The 13 positions are:

The Sun and Earth carry the most weight by far. Together they account for roughly 70% of your design, which is why your Sun gate and incarnation cross are such a big part of who you are. The personal planets (Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) and the social/transpersonal planets (Jupiter through Pluto) add the finer detail.

Personality vs. Design: black and red#

Here is the idea that makes Human Design unlike astrology. Each of those 13 planets is calculated at two different times, producing two columns in your chart:

• Personality: calculated at the exact moment of your birth, and printed in black. This is the conscious you: how you experience yourself, your mind, your sense of "I am this." It's the side you can read about and recognise.
• Design: calculated roughly 88 days before birth (precisely 88° of solar arc earlier), and printed in red. This is the unconscious, body-based you: traits that run automatically, that others see in you before you do, inherited and largely outside your awareness.

A gate can be switched on by your black side, your red side, both, or neither, and that changes how it shows up. The two sides together are sometimes pictured as the Personality crystal (consciousness) and the Design crystal (the body vehicle), meeting in you.

Why 88 degrees before birth?#

The Design date isn't 88 days exactly. It's the moment the Sun was 88 degrees of arc behind its birth position, which lands around 88–89 days earlier. Human Design ties this to the body's prenatal development. You don't need the math to use your chart, but if you're curious how the moment is found, see how a chart is calculated.

How a planet becomes a gate and line#

The zodiac is a 360° wheel. Human Design overlays the 64 gates (one for each I Ching hexagram) around that same wheel, so every degree of longitude falls inside exactly one gate, and each gate is divided into 6 lines.

So for each of the 26 activations the engine:

1. Finds the planet's exact ecliptic longitude at that moment.
2. Maps that longitude to the gate it falls in.
3. Subdivides the gate into 6 to find the line (and, deeper still, the color, tone, and base).

That's why you'll see your activations written as numbers like 34.2 or 7.1: gate, then line. Your profile (for example 1/3 or 5/1) comes straight from two of these: the line of your Personality Sun and the line of your Design Sun.

A few of those placements also carry a fixing: the planet sits in a line it is said to express especially harmoniously (exalted), especially awkwardly (in detriment), or both at once (juxtaposed). The ▲ ▼ ◆ marks beside an activation show it, and Fixing explains what they mean.

Reading your activation table#

In a standard chart the two columns sit side by side, Design (red) on the left, Personality (black) on the right, both running from the Sun at the top down to Pluto. A typical row looks like this:

You read it as: "My Design Sun is in Gate 2, line 3; my Personality Sun is in Gate 7, line 1." From those 26 little numbers, the entire bodygraph is built: your type, authority, profile, and incarnation cross.

Explore each planet#

Each planet adds its own flavour to the gate it activates. Start with the most important one and work down the table in order:

• The Sun in Human Design: your core expression and the heaviest single influence in your chart.
• The Earth: grounding and balance, always opposite the Sun.
• The Moon: drive, and what moves you to act.
• The North Node and the South Node: where your life is heading, and where it came from.
• Mercury: communication and what you need to express.
• Venus: values, love, and what you find precious.
• Mars: immaturity and raw, developing energy.
• Jupiter: law, expansion, and reward.
• Saturn: discipline, structure, and lessons.
• Uranus: the unusual and the unique.
• Neptune: the spiritual, the hidden, and what's slowly revealed.
• Pluto: truth, transformation, and what you confront.
• Fixing: exaltation, detriment and juxtaposition: the placements where a planet expresses its line especially well, especially awkwardly, or both.
