The six lines are the building blocks of your Human Design. Every one of the 64 gates in your chart carries one of six lines, and the two most important lines in your whole design combine to form your profile. They are drawn from your Sun and Earth at birth and at your design moment. Learn the six lines and you have the vocabulary to understand profiles, gates, and the texture of how you actually move through life.
Each line is a distinct "way of being human." They come from the structure of the I Ching hexagram, which stacks six lines from bottom to top. The lines run in a deliberate order, from the most personal and inward (Line 1) to the most outward and universal (Line 6).
The six lines at a glance#
| Line | Keynote | Theme |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Investigator | Foundation, study, security through knowing |
| 2 | The Hermit | Natural talent, called out of solitude |
| 3 | The Martyr | Trial-and-error, learning by experimenting |
| 4 | The Opportunist | Relationships, influence, the network |
| 5 | The Heretic | Projection, leadership, practical solutions |
| 6 | The Role Model | Three life phases, wisdom, living example |
The two trigrams: personal vs. transpersonal#
A hexagram splits into two halves of three lines each, and this split is the single most useful idea for understanding the lines.
- Lower trigram — Lines 1, 2, 3 — the personal lines. These are about you: your own foundation, your own gifts, your own lived experience. Lower-trigram people are, fundamentally, here to discover and develop themselves. They don't depend on others to feel whole, and they can find the constant pull of relationships and "networking" draining.
- Upper trigram — Lines 4, 5, 6 — the transpersonal lines. These are about others: your relationships, your reputation, and the example you set. Upper-trigram people are wired for and through connection. Their gifts come alive in the context of community, network, and the people they influence.
Knowing which half of the spectrum you fall on already tells you a lot. A Line 1/3 person is deeply self-referenced and inward; a Line 4/6 person lives and breathes their relationships. Your profile usually pairs one personal line with one transpersonal line, bridging the inner and outer worlds, which is part of why profiles feel so true to life. Two profiles are the exceptions: the 1/3 is the only one that sits wholly in the lower trigram, and the 4/6 the only one wholly in the upper. That follows from the arithmetic further down this page rather than from any source, so read it as our own observation.
Line 1 — The Investigator#
The lower trigram begins with foundation. Line 1 needs to know. There's a deep drive to research, study, and understand a subject from the ground up, because security comes from having solid ground under your feet. A Line 1 feels anxious or shaky when they're operating on shallow knowledge, and grounded and confident once they've done the homework.
- Gift: depth, expertise, becoming the authority others rely on.
- Shadow: insecurity, endless preparation, never feeling "ready enough."
- Practical: honour your need to dig in. Your foundation becomes the platform everything else stands on.
Ra Uru Hu called all first lines "basically insecure": only a solid foundation lets them move forward. And the foundation is not only for the Line 1. In his account, the secure ground the lower trigram lays is what the upper trigram then carries out into the world, which is why each lower line has a partner above it (the harmonics, below).
Line 2 — The Hermit#
Line 2 carries a natural, almost effortless talent: gifts that come so easily the person often can't see them, even as everyone around them can. The Line 2 wants to be left alone to do their own thing, yet life keeps calling them out of their cave. Someone recognises the talent and names it, and the Line 2 is drawn into the world to share it.
- Gift: innate ability, a quiet magnetism that others notice.
- Shadow: hiding away, dismissing your own gifts, resenting being interrupted.
- Practical: protect your alone time, but stay open to the genuine call. You're often seen more clearly by others than by yourself.
Ra's image for the second line is a house at night: the Line 2 lives on the main floor with the lights on and the windows open while a parade goes by outside, and everybody can look in. That is why others see the gift before the Line 2 does. The call is an approach from outside, in any part of life: to love, to work, to a path. Not every call is the right one, and the Line 2 does not settle it by thinking it over. In Ra's words, only through Strategy and Authority does the 2nd line know whether a call is correct.
Line 3 — The Martyr#
Line 3 learns by trial and error. This is the great experimenter of the lines: bumping into life, trying things, discovering what doesn't work, and turning that into hard-won wisdom. "Mistakes" aren't failures for a Line 3; they're the method. The keynote "Martyr" reflects how much they go through to find out what's real.
- Gift: resilience, practical wisdom, knowing what works because you've tested it.
- Shadow: pessimism, treating each setback as personal failure, giving up too soon.
- Practical: reframe your bumps as data, not defeat. You discover truth through your own hands-on experience.
The Line 3's theme is bonds made and broken. A 3rd line notices what doesn't work in a relationship, a job or an arrangement faster than anyone else, and moves on from it. That is not always an ending: a bond made and broken can be as ordinary as a parent who leaves for work every morning and comes home every evening. As Ra put it, there is no such thing as failure for a 3rd line, only discovery.
Line 4 — The Opportunist#
The upper trigram opens with relationship. Line 4 lives through its network of friends, family, and community. Opportunities for work, love, or the next chapter tend to come through people the Line 4 already knows, not through cold approaches to strangers. They're warm, influential, and need a foundation of solid relationships to feel safe stepping forward.
- Gift: loyalty, friendliness, an ability to influence and connect people.
- Shadow: clinging to relationships past their time, fear of being alone.
- Practical: tend your network like a garden. Line up your next step through people who already know and value you before you let go of the current one.
Line 5 — The Heretic#
Line 5 carries projection: people project hopes, expectations, and savior-fantasies onto them, often before they've done anything to earn it. This gives the Line 5 a natural aura of leadership and the power to deliver practical, universal solutions in a crisis. But projection cuts both ways. When the Line 5 doesn't meet the (often unrealistic) projection, the reputation can swing hard the other way.
- Gift: practical problem-solving, leadership, the ability to be there when it matters.
- Shadow: being misjudged, overpromising, hiding behind the projected image.
- Practical: manage your reputation carefully and only step in when genuinely called. Deliver real solutions and let your results speak.
Line 6 — The Role Model#
Line 6 is unique: it lives through three distinct life phases. The turns between them are not set ages. The teaching times them by two slow planets coming back to where they stood at your birth: the Saturn return, which falls between about 28 and 30, and the Kiron return (Ra's spelling of Chiron), at about 50.
- Birth to the Saturn return — the experimenter. A Line 6 lives much like a Line 3, learning through trial and error and the bumps of experience.
- Saturn return to Kiron return — on the roof. A withdrawn, observing phase. The Line 6 steps back, watches, heals, and digests what the first phase taught them.
- After the Kiron return — the Role Model. Having lived, experimented, and reflected, the Line 6 climbs down off the roof to live as an example of what's possible: wise, whole, and trustworthy.
Both returns are exact moments that differ from person to person, and a slow planet can cross its birth position two or three times over several months, so each turn is a window rather than a birthday. The Cycles page in the app dates yours.
- Gift: wisdom, objectivity, embodying integrity others aspire to.
- Shadow: disillusionment during the roof years, feeling detached or "above it all."
- Practical: trust the phases. Each one is doing exactly what it's meant to, even when the roof years feel like waiting.
How the lines build your profile#
Your profile is simply your two most important lines stacked together. For example, 1/3 (Investigator / Martyr), 4/6 (Opportunist / Role Model), or 5/1 (Heretic / Investigator). The first number is your conscious (Personality) line, the second your unconscious (Design) line. There are exactly twelve combinations, and the next section shows why no other can occur.
Every other line in your chart matters too: each gate you have is colored by its line, adding nuance to how that gate expresses. But the headline is your profile. Below the line sits its colour, and Ra tied that layer to the profile too: the colour under your two profile Suns is the underlying motivation of both your conscious and your unconscious line.
Why there are exactly twelve profiles#
Your Design moment is calculated from where the Sun stood 88° of arc before your birth. A line is 0.9375° wide, so 88° is just under 94 lines. Count that back around the six lines and the Design Sun always lands two or three lines past the Personality Sun, wrapping from 6 back to 1. Nothing else is possible. Six first lines, each with two possible second lines, makes twelve profiles, and it is why there is never a 1/2 or a 3/4. This is our own working from the 88° rule rather than a quote from the canon, and the published profile statistics bear it out.
| Conscious line | Two lines on (common) | Three lines on (rare) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1/3 | 1/4 |
| 2 | 2/4 | 2/5 |
| 3 | 3/5 | 3/6 |
| 4 | 4/6 | 4/1 |
| 5 | 5/1 | 5/2 |
| 6 | 6/2 | 6/3 |
The step is three lines only when the Personality Sun sits in roughly the last 13% of its line, so the right-hand column is about six times rarer. Each profile in the left column belongs to roughly 14.5% of people, each in the right column to about 2.2%.
The harmonics: 1–4, 2–5, 3–6#
The harmony between lines is part of the canon: each line of the lower trigram has a partner in the same place of the upper one, so 1 pairs with 4, 2 with 5 and 3 with 6. A step of three lines is exactly that harmonic step. So the six rare profiles are the ones whose unconscious line is the harmonic partner of their conscious line.
Apply the same step to both lines of a profile and you get its harmonic partner: 1/3 and 4/6, 1/4 and 4/1, 2/4 and 5/1, 2/5 and 5/2, 3/5 and 6/2, 3/6 and 6/3. The pairing follows from the line harmony, but no primary source lays it out as a table, and it is not a compatibility score. How two people's lines meet is set out under profiles in relationships.
Two different cuts through the six lines#
The trigram break falls between lines 3 and 4. The break between the angles falls somewhere else. Every profile that starts with 1, 2 or 3 is a Right Angle profile, every one that starts with 5 or 6 is a Left Angle profile, and line 4 splits: the 4/6 is Right Angle and the 4/1 is the one Juxtaposition. The angle comes from the profile, even though it is usually named as part of the incarnation cross.
