Your Human Design chart is called a bodygraph: the colourful body-shaped diagram you get when you enter your birth date, time, and place. At first glance it looks like a circuit board crossed with an anatomy chart, and that's not far off. It shows how energy flows (or doesn't) through you. The good news is you don't have to decode all of it at once. There's a natural order to follow, and the first few steps already give you most of what matters.
This page is your guided tour. We'll name every part of the chart, including the columns of numbers beside the body, then walk through the exact sequence to read it in, from the big picture down to the fine detail.
Before you start: get your own chart#
Everything below makes more sense with your own chart open beside it. To calculate one you need three things: your birth date, your birth place, and your birth time, as exactly as you can find it. The time matters more than people expect. A difference of an hour or two can move a planet into the next line or gate, complete or break a channel, and occasionally change your type or authority. A birth certificate or a parent's memory is worth looking for.
You can get a free Human Design chart here and follow along. If you don't know your birth time, say so: the chart then shows which parts of it are certain and which depend on the time.
The three building blocks#
Everything in your chart is built from just three things. Learn these and the rest falls into place.
- Centers — the nine shapes (triangles and squares) on the bodygraph. Each governs a kind of energy: thinking, communicating, identity, willpower, life-force, emotions, intuition, and so on.
- Gates — the 64 numbered points sitting on the edges of the centers. Each gate is one of the 64 I Ching hexagrams and adds a specific, granular flavour to a center.
- Channels — the lines that connect two centers. A channel is made of two gates, one at each end. When both gates are activated in your chart, the whole line lights up and a permanent energy pathway forms between those two centers.
That's the whole machine. Your type, strategy, authority, and profile aren't extra parts. They're derived from how these centers, gates, and channels combine.
How a channel forms#
A channel only counts when both of its gates are switched on, one at each end. With just one gate active, only that gate's half of the line colours in (a hanging gate), and the centers it would join stay open. The moment the second gate joins it, the whole channel lights up and both centers at its ends become defined.
Defined vs. open: the most important distinction#
Look at the colours. Some centers are colored in (defined); others are white (open or undefined). This single distinction drives almost everything.
| Defined center | Open (undefined) center | |
|---|---|---|
| Colour | Filled in | White |
| Energy | Consistent and reliable: it's always "on" and works the same way | Variable: you take it in from others and the environment, amplifying it |
| Feels like | A fixed trait you can count on in yourself | A place of sensitivity, learning, and wisdom (but also conditioning) |
A center becomes defined when at least one full channel running into it is colored. Defined centers are who you consistently are. Open centers are where you're impressionable. You feel other people's energy there strongly, which is a gift for wisdom but also where you're most likely to take on conditioning and try to be someone you're not.
Roughly speaking: defined is your steady broadcast; open is your antenna.
Personality and Design: the two colours#
Look again and you'll see the colours come in two inks: black and red. That's because every chart is calculated twice and the two layers are laid on top of each other:
- Personality (black) is your conscious self, calculated for your exact birth moment: the "you" you recognise and would describe.
- Design (red) is your unconscious, body-based self, calculated for a moment about three months earlier. These are gifts others often notice in you before you do.
A gate or channel can be activated by either layer, or by both at once. So the very same channel can light up in three different ways:
It doesn't change the outcome: once a channel is complete, it and its centers are defined just the same. The red/black split only tells you whether a trait is conscious or runs below your awareness. For the astronomy behind it, see how a chart is calculated.
On our charts the two inks reach the centers as well. A defined center is outlined in the ink of the side its definition needs: black when one channel defining it is conscious from end to end, red only when every one of them relies on a Design gate. One clean channel is enough, because that channel defines the center by itself. Because a channel needs both of its gates, a center can still be outlined red while a gate inside it is black — that gate is conscious, but every connection defining the center leans on the other side. Most other software leaves every defined center one colour and shows the split on the channels alone.
The numbers beside the body#
Most charts print two columns of symbols and numbers on either side of the bodygraph: Design in red on the left, Personality in black on the right. Each row is one of the 13 planets Human Design uses, from the Sun and Earth at the top down to Pluto, so each column holds 13 activations and the chart 26 in all.
Each activation is written as two numbers joined by a dot, such as 17.3:
- The first number is the gate. 17.3 means the planet sat in Gate 17 at that moment, which is why Gate 17 is coloured in on the body. Every coloured gate on the bodygraph comes from one of these rows.
- The second number is the line, from 1 to 6. Each gate is split into six lines, and the line gives that gate its particular angle. Lines are also where your profile comes from: it is the line of your Personality Sun over the line of your Design Sun.
Some charts add a small mark after a number, such as ▲ or ▼. It shows a planet exalted or in detriment in that line, a layer of detail you can safely leave for later. What matters first is that the columns are the source and the bodygraph is the picture drawn from them: nothing is coloured in on the body that isn't listed in a column.
The order to read your chart in#
Don't start with the 64 gates. Start at the top of the funnel and work down. Each layer below adds detail to the one above it.
1. Type — the big picture#
Your type is the first and most important thing to know. It's determined entirely by which centers and channels are defined: specifically by your aura (how your energy meets the world) and whether you carry consistent life-force energy. There are four: Manifestor, Generator, Projector, and Reflector. The Manifesting Generator shares the Generator's aura and is a Generator sub-type, though many list it as a fifth. Knowing your type tells you the kind of energy you're working with.
2. Strategy — how to engage#
Each type has a strategy: the simplest, most reliable way to move through life with less resistance. A Generator is here to respond; a Projector waits for the invitation; a Manifestor informs before acting. Strategy answers how should I approach opportunities?
3. Authority — how to decide#
Your authority is your built-in decision-making compass: the signal inside your body to trust when you're making a real choice. It comes straight from which centers are defined: emotional, splenic, sacral, and so on. Where strategy is the how, authority is the what to trust in the moment. Together, strategy and authority is the practical core of Human Design and where almost all the change happens.
4. Profile — the role you play#
Your profile (two numbers like 1/3 or 5/1) describes the character you move through life as: the costume your type wears. It comes from the lines of your Sun and Earth placements and colours how your strategy and authority show up day to day.
5. Centers — your fixed and open energies#
Now zoom into the nine centers. Note which are defined (consistent strengths) and which are open (sensitivity, wisdom, and where you get conditioned). This is the layer that tells you where you're reliable and where you're absorbing the world.
6. Definition — how your defined centers connect#
Look at how your defined centers join up. If every one of them is linked to the others through channels, you have a single definition. If they fall into two separate groups with open centers in between, you have a split; three or four groups make a triple or quadruple split. Your definition says how you process: a single definition tends to work things through on its own, while a split often finds that the right person or conversation bridges the gap and makes things click.
7. Channels and gates — the fine detail#
Finally, the channels and gates add texture: specific gifts, talents, and themes wired into you. These are a deep, rewarding study you can explore over months and years, but they make far more sense once the layers above are in place.
Two more things you'll see on a chart#
Most charts name two further details. Neither is where to begin, but both are worth knowing about once the layers above feel familiar.
- The incarnation cross is written as a name, such as the Right Angle Cross of the Sphinx, often followed by four gate numbers. Those four are the gates of your Sun and Earth on both sides, the heaviest activations in the chart, and together they describe the overall theme of your life. Read it after your type, profile and authority: it is the why behind them, and it makes most sense once the how is lived.
- The four arrows at the top of the chart, around the Head and Ajna centers, are the Variables. Each points left or right and describes how you best digest food, the kind of environment your body does best in, the drive behind your mind, and how you naturally see the world. They are an advanced layer, usually explored once the basics are lived.
A worked example#
Say your chart looks like the sample above, with the Ajna, Throat, G, Heart, and Spleen defined and the Sacral open. Here's how the order pays off:
- Type. An undefined Sacral, but a motor (the Heart, through the G center) wired to the Throat, points to a Manifestor.
- Strategy. Inform the people affected before you act.
- Authority. With the Spleen defined and the Solar Plexus open, this is likely splenic authority: trust the quiet, in-the-moment hit.
- Profile. Read the two profile numbers to see the character driving it all.
- Centers. Defined Ajna, Throat, G, Heart, Spleen are steady strengths; the open Sacral is where energy must be managed and not overspent.
- Definition. The four channels join all five defined centers into one connected group: a single definition, which tends to process things on its own.
- Channels and gates. The specific colored channels (here, between those defined centers) name the exact gifts at play.
Notice how each step builds on the last. By the time you reach the gates, you already understand the person.
Common questions#
What do the numbers in my chart mean?#
They are the gate and line of each planet. In 17.3, 17 is the gate and 3 is its line. The red column is your Design, calculated about three months before birth; the black column is your Personality, at the moment of birth.
Why is part of my chart white?#
White centers are open: no complete channel defines them. They aren't missing or broken. They are where you take in and amplify other people's energy, and so where you can grow wise about that energy, or be conditioned by it.
Why are some parts red and some black?#
Red is the Design side (unconscious, body), black the Personality side (conscious, mind). A channel in both colours is activated from both sides. A center is defined either way.
Can my chart change?#
No. Your chart is fixed by the moment and place of your birth. What changes is how you live it. The planets' current positions, the transits, colour in gates for everyone for a while, which you can feel, but they never change the chart itself. The one real exception is a wrong birth time: if you learn the right one, the chart is recalculated.
What if I don't know my birth time?#
Much of the chart can still be read. Your type and authority are often the same across a whole day, though your profile usually is not: the Sun moves into a new line about once a day. A good calculator shows which parts are certain and which depend on the time. It is still worth looking for the time, because the parts that do change can matter.
How to use this in practice#
- Don't try to memorise everything. Layer 1 (type, strategy, authority, and your defined vs. open centers) gives you the vast majority of the practical value.
- Experiment, don't believe. Human Design is meant to be lived and tested. Try running your strategy and authority for a few weeks and watch what changes.
- Come back for the detail. The gates and channels are a lifelong study. They reward patience, and they land best once the foundation is solid.
Start with your type, then pair it with your strategy and authority. That's the doorway into the whole system, and your free Human Design chart is the place to begin.
